VOLKSWAGEN T2 BAY WINDOW CAMPER VAN

Introduced in August 1967 the ‘Bay Window’ model replaced the T2 ‘Split Screen’. It was a radical rethink and changes such as ball-joint front suspension in place of the previous king and link pin set-up and independent rear suspension, (known as IRS), was fitted by Volkswagen in place of reduction boxes and swing-arms. A single piece windscreen and wind down cab windows were also an upgrade. Engines were also fitted with a ‘back bar’ to enhance engine stability.

The donor vehicles were extremely versatile, in turn giving rise to a number of companies being involved in a wide range of Camper Van conversions and modifications. These included Danbury, Devon, Dormobile, Canterbury Pitt and Viking. Original examples of these are highly desired by collectors and enthusiasts alike.

There were two engine options fitted to the Volkswagen T2 between 1967 and 1979. The first was the Type 2 1600cc engine which is identical to the Type 1 Beetle engine except it has an extra engine mounting at the rear of the crank case. This is commonly referred to as an “Upright” engine. The second option, the Type 4, first appeared in 1972 and was sold in three capacities (1700cc, 1800cc and 2000cc). This is known within the Volkswagen community as the Pancake engine.

1979 witnessed the end of ‘T2 Bay Window’ production in Germany, however in 1995 the T2 Bay Window was put back into production in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Known as the T2c it came with a 1600cc air-cooled engine for the Brazil market and with a water-cooled 1800cc four-cylinder fuel-injected engine for the Mexican market.

The end of Kombi production on a worldwide basis was celebrated by a run of just 200 Special Edition models. Produced in an exclusive silver colour with limited edition emblems marks them out as all other Kombis were produced in white!
